How it works

Small ァ ィ ェ ォ: new sounds

They build sounds Japanese didn’t have, for foreign words. Big kana + small kana = one beat. ヴ (vu) exists too, but most people just say bu.

  • パーティー · pātī · party · テ + ィ = ti
  • フォーク · fōku · fork · フ + ォ = fo
  • フィリピン · Firipin · the Philippines · フ + ィ = fi

シャ works like しゃ

All the hiragana combos work the same in katakana, one beat each: キャ, シャ, チャ, ジャ…

  • シャワー · shawā · 3 beats · shower

A final consonant gets a vowel

Japanese words end in a vowel (or ン), so katakana adds a vowel when an English word ends in a consonant: a final l becomes ル, a final t becomes ト, a final d becomes ド.

  • ホテル · hoteru · hotel · final l → ル
  • テーブル · tēburu · table · final l → ル
  • テスト · tesuto · test · final t → ト (E-05)
  • ベッド · beddo · bed · final d → ド

Your name in katakana

Write the sound, not the spelling: split your name into Japanese beats. A final consonant gets a vowel: ケイト Keito (Kate), マイク Maiku (Mike). There’s no l: it becomes the ラ row, as in リリー Rirī (Lily). A long vowel gets a dash (ー): ルーカス Rūkasu (Lucas). Small kana build new sounds: ソフィー Sofī (Sophie). There can be more than one way to write a name: pick the one that sounds closest when you say it.

Evil twins: ソ and ン

In print they look almost the same. ン (n): the dash lies flatter and the long stroke rises UP from the bottom, like シ. Tadashi’s scarf floats up as he hums: “Nnn~”. ソ (so): the dash stands upright and the long stroke falls DOWN from the top, like ツ. Soy sauce pours down.

  • ン · n · the long stroke rises up
  • ソ · so · the long stroke falls down

The trap

Building or beer?

ビル (biru) is short for “building”. ビール (bīru), from the Dutch “bier”, is beer. The long vowel (ー) is the whole difference: don’t order a building.

  • ビル · biru · 2 beats: building
  • ビール · bīru · 3 beats: beer

Mini test

5 questions. Get 4 right and the level’s mini test box ticks itself.

Homework for the comments

In the comments: write your name in katakana. Write the sound, not the spelling!

Example: Kate → ケイト · Lucas → ルーカス
